Paywast developed the Bayan (Expression) platform for Oxfam Novib. The platform combines SMS and social media, allowing users of mobile phones and other internet connected device users to access content, share information, interact, and learn from other networks, allowing them to advocate for change. The Bayan platform supports an essential digital community for sharing and debate among youth from all strata of society to discuss important topics across geographic boundaries. The topics shared include discussion of human rights, politics, and society, how to further the participation of women in peace building and leadership, and other issues regarding women’s rights and conflict resolution. Because women are the most likely victims of war and conflict, when they can meaningfully participate in the discussion they can improve the prospects of peace, and they can help to expand the conversation and improve the prospects for protecting their rights and put their ideas on a more equal footing with men. Bayan seeks to improve awareness on the topics above and help people overcome the challenges to participation in civic and political life.
